We created an online profile for each of the top dating websites and spent over 30 hours comparing each site’s matching capabilities, search features and messaging tools.

We took personality tests, answered over 300 dating-related questions and downloaded apps for all the sites that offered them.

We focused on general sites that include all types of singles, but also included our best pick for focused dating that caters to specific groups of people.

We also added Tinder and plan to review more dating apps in the future.

The free version lets you search at those granular levels, unlike other sites we tested where you have to pay a subscription.

This company doesn’t let you see people’s profile pictures without subscribing, but with the free advanced searching you can at least see if e Harmony has people who match the groups you’re looking to date before you pay for a subscription.

Single men are clearly in the minority (under 20%).

Many users have created great profiles and are friends with each other - you can see at first glance that it is mostly the experienced swingers who are the ones who clearly know what they want.

So it is rather the exception that in the profiles on "Partner exchange" there's a "maybe" or "probably not" ticked.

Tinder is our pick for the best dating app because it has the greatest pool of potential dates and because it is easy to use.
